1. Debossing

Debossing, or blind embossing, is one of the simplest and most popular ways to brand your notebooks. This design technique is the most popular and cost-effective customization method as it results in a strong and clear logo and is suitable for all materials, on the front and on the spines of the books. Your logo is CNC (computer numerical control) milled onto a brass die, heated, and poured into the notebook’s cover.

Embossing works particularly well on a leather cover journal, but we can brand all kinds of notebooks with this technique. Additionally, we can also emboss your logo on faux leather, Moleskine style vegan leather, and fabric. Some faux leather journals are thermo-reactive, like the Castelli Tucson notebook, resulting in a contrasted two-tone effect. A debossing on a card is similar to a letterpress.

2. Foiling

Beginning with the same method as debossing, your logo is milled onto a brass die and heated before a colored film is placed between the die and the cover, leaving a colored impression. This adds a luxury aspect to the notebook with the addition of foil (often metallic), allowing the logo to stand out even more.

Foiling, or foil blocking, is a classic option that suits our custom leather and non-leather products. As the heat does a lot of the work, the impression is not as deep as with debossing. We keep your die-stamp on file so you can return to us whenever you want for repeat orders. The most popular options for foiling are metallic gold and metallic silver. However, there are many other options available. We have foiled both metallic turquoise and metallic pink in the past. Other available options are both matte and gloss colors. Various foils can be applied to all of our products, with a huge range of colors available for our non-leather books and around a dozen different colors perfect for our real leather books.

3. UV Printing

Ultraviolet lights instantly dry or cure ink as we use UV printing, a cutting-edge form of digital printing. As the printer distributes ink on the surface of a material, known as a “substrate“, specially designed UV lights follow closely, curing – or drying – the ink in an instant. You can directly print onto most notebook covers using this method, including our leather and vegan leather covers. We print using CMYK-W to give you full color on even the most intricate designs.

Moreover, for a logo with a high-quality finish, we highly recommend the UV printing process. The finished effect is similar to screen print, but unlike screen print, the UV method allows for full-color print, rather than just block color, and it’s also matte in finish, adding a professional touch to your customized notebooks.
